Foaling History

Three prior foals. As a maiden mare in 2005, Dirty foaled at noon, filly, 2 1/2 weeks early. She was half bagged, with no milk or wax observed at morning feeding. In 2007 she foaled at 355 days, colt, bagged and blatantly waxed, at 1:50 AM. In 2008 she foaled at 336 days, filly, going from ¾ bagged to fully bagged with a hint of clear wax overnight, followed by dripping milk and delivering her foal around noon. Her pattern appears to be bagging late, stalling out partly bagged, then rather quickly going from ½ - ¾ bagged to fully bagged in the 12-24 hours just prior to foaling. Any wax or milk is detected just hours prior to delivery. She is fairly quiet in the stall. When bred to a solid stallion, Dirty has contributed her overo genes to 2 foals of 3. Two of three foals have been born around noon, so there is obvious potential for a daytime foaling.

Left side white wax at dinner, around 6. Right side also waxed by 8. Pacing (not standing still) started around 9:45. Water broke 10:18. BIG sorrel colt 10:29pm.

April 6

353 days

No particular change other than Dirty once again not standing still for long and showing us the alternate foaling window of 1:30-5:30. Mildly active during other periods.

April 5

352 days

¾ bagged.  This mare is subtle about showing her discomfort. Last night Dirty was “active” from 10:30-2:30 (CA time). She would stand quietly for 10-15 minutes, sometimes working her mouth, then walk off and return to stand quietly again. She tried lying down but didn’t stay down for 1 minute. Dirty has shown other possible foaling windows - this one was very defined by her behavior last night.

March 30

346 days

Dirty was off pattern last night. She was down to rest 3 times - around 11pm stayed down for over 20 minutes and appeared to get some sleep. Full moon last night and incoming storm might be a trigger.

March 29

About 2/3 bagged. Dirty is being very subtle about her discomfort. Examples are weight shifts, head shaking or rubbing, stretching, working her mouth. It isn’t unusual for her to pick up her tail as if she is feeling pressure or gas. She isn’t lying down much, and when she does only stays down for about 10 minutes.

March 21

Half bagged. Softening around and under the tail. Starting to look restless / more uncomfortable. Belly dropped into a V today so the foal may be turning.

March 7

In the barn. Lightly bagged.

No particular indication at dinner. No wax or milk showing. Bag didn’t even look quiet full. Lace started acting uncomfortable around 11pm. By 11:30 she was so uncomfortable she started lying down and standing, apparently trying to position her foal. The down and up repeated 13 times until  shortly after 2am when her water broke. Sac appeared with no foot showing. It became apparent Lace was having problems. The foal was still deep inside, upside down. Shoulder deep, Eric helped. Lace later did some pushing. Eric managed to pull the large bay colt about 2:50am. Mom and BIG colt doing fine.

April 19

351 days

Between breakfast and dinner Lace has gone from ¾ bagged to fully bagged. Today was an unseasonably warm day but the mare is sweating an hour after dark. Lace has been a VERY quiet mare in the stall. What little discomfort she shares as activity (tail swish, working her mouth) seems to be mostly in the 10-4 time frame.

Overnight went from no bag to ¾ bagged.
